Ethiopia - ERA set to execute record high value projects

By Tedla Desta

Capital

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia -
The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) is set to execute a record of high value projects during the next Ethiopian year, Samson Wondimu, Information and Public Relations Head of the Authority told Capital.

Samson said that the Authority has budgeted over 5.6 billion birr for 172 projects to be performed in the coming year, from which 3.1 billion is covered by the government while the rest is from loans and grants. The budget is to be used for road construction, conducting studies, capacity building and other activities.

The Addis Ababa –Nazareth –Gedeo road is one of the earliest projects to be launched in the 2007/08 budget year, he said. The 214 km road is to have eight lanes. In addition, Samson said: construction of 246 km of road under 11 projects will be started in the coming year.
Similarly, ERA said it has constructed roads covering 14,000 kms with an outlay of over 4.9 billion Birr during the past Ethiopian budget year. He said that ERA has achieved 96 per cent of targets to construct 15,149 km roads during the reported period.

ERA had also completed the construction, upgrading and heavy maintenance of roads as well as conducting feasibility studies and undertaking capacity building activities, among others. Samson also said ERA has begun implementing a five-year development program aimed at strengthening the road sector.

The Authority signed a contract agreement worth over 8 billion birr for 42 construction project works and about a quarter of a billion birr for consultancy service with local and international contractors and consultants. The construction of most of the projects has already started and will be completed within two to three years.

Keep in mind this construction dosen't mention anything any consttruction in Tigray rather than other part of the nation. But the elite diaspora will change this story and they will tell us as if this 8 lanes major road construction instead of from Addis going to Nazareth, vice versa going to Mekelle.

Despite the diaspora parking lot attendant propaganda Ethiopia every day development is is becoming as normal as daily business.
ERA is doing wonderful and successful job.
Ethiopia and EPRDF for ever.
Happy millennium for the peace loving Ethiopians.

While the vocal Diaspora is blindly decrying the government for everything under the sun, Ethiopia is undergoing positive changes in physical capital and human capital investments which are essential if poverty is to be eliminated in Ethiopia. It is just mind boggling that some extreme groups in the Diaspora keep denying these important and ongoing improvements which we see then with our own eyes.

It sounds great but we need a peaceful mind to enjoy our country, Ethiopia's, sucess. let's all try to learn how to be patient and wise. Through life, I have learned a great deal that words can pierce through someone's hurt that nobody but GOD can heal. Please let us all be wise and considerent when we argue among ourselves. Especially, generalizing someone with the ethnic group that they belong ,and exchanging hateful words in our arguments is not healthy. And i do not think GOD will be happy about it. Belive me, i have a dream that one day, soon, Ethiopia will be consider us heaven on earth and people around the world will beg to come to Ethiopia. In the mean time, let us work in our problems so we can be the light to the world. The key to this manifestation is not Money, Power, and Respect. It is Humilitay, Patience, Wisdom, Clean hurt, and at most the will to change. Please let us all try to love and respect one another regardless of our ethnic and religious differences. After all GOD is a god of Love, Happiness, and Oness. On the other hand, the devil thrives in Conflict, Difference, Hate, and evil acts. As a good Ethiopians, we have to beat the devil on it's own game and say no for "Divisons" and "Hate". Please let us be a good servents for GOD because he is the only way to a true peace, happiness, and sucess. To me, You are all a true Ethiopians because i am blind with a love of GOD. Do not forget that Ethiopa is like a bouque of flower. In a bouque of flower, there is many kinds of flowers that vary in colors and smell. If the bouque lose one kind of flower, it may not have the same kind of beauty. What makes Ethiopia(the bouque) unique and speciall is her different children that each have a value and traditon that make up Ethiopia whole.Let us keep Ethiopa as a bouque of flower forever so GOD can pour his favor over our mother, Ethiopa.

Four lanes is more than enough.
They should put the other four lanes in other areas that have no roads at all.

If the look of 8 lanes is what appeals to them then they should decrease the prohibitive taxes on vehicles so that more of us can drive.

It is an admirable effort to expand the road but; I beg the government of "Ethiopia" not to bring a Chinese company their work is shabby, substandard and above all I hate Chinese they are disgusting and despicable who work hard day and night to rob Africa what was left of the European colonizers.

this is very good news!!!!!
let us stay positive and contribute as much as we can. i heard eritreans in america give 2% of their salary to eritrean government. WOW! that is crazy! if there are 500,000 eritreans with an average 25,000 a year salary, do you know what 2% means?? that is almost 300 million dollars in plain CASH to eritrean governent!!! 88|
wow, eritrea have no private press, no multiparty elections, no freedom for religions etc etc but in Eritrean Birr(nafka) this 2% means 2.5 BILLION NAFKA EVERY YEAR!!!! 88|

if we ethiopians did even half for our country, ethiopia would have been much better. atleast if we sponsor one or two projects as a diaspora, that would have been nice :(

The people and government of Ethiopia are constructing and modernizing the road on land sea and water that takes the people to the promised land of a middle income stage. The selfish, are criticizing those who are building the bridges, administer the air lines, teach students, cure the sick. Anarchists can't build but day dream, the greedy compares his wage against the person who is helping his people; he does not see the utility one can get from service of others than for this short life where most have already wasted the majority of it any way.

Eritreans must do by any means they are looser. They are destroy our mother land for 40 Years. They destroy now with the help of Meles. I don`t care about them they are not Ethiopians. If they pay their 100% of their Salary they didn`t succses at all.

Building a train from Nazret to Addis would have been better. Good for the environment and also cost... The cost of repairing 8 lanes road will be high in the future. However, it's better building a cargo and public train system is better for Africa /Ethiopia.

I am glad things are being done and I expect it. I also expect a free election which brings about competition to make it even better. Candy business is not the way.

I am sure another govenment would do the same or better. There will be more of unity so IT has to be better.

It is good news, but let it not mask permenant growth and change required.

That is a good news. Keep up the development work for the people of that beloved land. But I think when they say 8 lanes, they meant 4 lanes each direction. Any way it is a big improvement. The next step should be posting the appropriate signs and speed limits and enforcing the highway traffic act.

Peace for all.

[My favorite highway sign will be an Exit sign for Wolenchiti. Next Exit Wolenchiti Exit 25B:) ]

This is a good news.

Ethiopia so far has a 2 lane highway. Now, what I am worried about is how many people and live stocks will be killed at this highway.

People are not aware of high way speed in Ethiopia as we have noticed at the Ring Road.

Hope that highway awareness takes place BEFORE allowing cars to zoom by at 120 Km/hr.

I recommend that instead of widening the exisiting "highway", it is much better to construct a new one via Bolle, leaving Kaliti, Akaki, Dukem, Debre-Zeit, Mojo, to the west and cut thru Yerer Mountains. In doing so, the distance will be reduced by at least 30%.

Any thought???
