Food, not votes, concern Ethiopia's hungry
HARTISHIEK, Ethiopia, May 9 (Reuters) - Ethiopia's elections are the furthest thing from Bisharo Sultan's mind.
As politicians wrangle over privatisation, land reform and the constitution hundreds of kilometres away in the capital Addis Ababa before polls on Sunday, Bisharo wonders how she will feed her four children.

Ethiopia’s Dramatic Move to Democracy
By Ahmed Siraj (Lecturer)
Walta
Prior to the year 1991, Ethiopia was never known for significant democratic achievements. When African heads of state and government gathered in Addis Ababa to inaugurate the OAU in 1963, Emperor Haile Sillassie was one of the few remaining absolute monarchs in the continent. During the Dergue era of 1974-91, Ethiopia was widely known as the home of Africa’s longest armed conflict.

Suppressing Dissent
Human Rights Abuses and Political Repression in Ethiopia's Oromia Region
On May 15, 2005, Ethiopia will hold national elections. The international community, including international donors, who have poured substantial amounts of aid into Ethiopia since the current government came to power fourteen years ago, will be watching these elections closely for signs that Ethiopia is moving towards real democracy. In advance of these elections, the government of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi enacted reforms that could, on the surface, make the elections more open. However, as this report documents, the political freedoms required for elections to be a meaningful exercise of Ethiopian citizens’ fundamental right to participate in the selection of their government do not exist for many Ethiopians. In Oromia, the largest and most populous state in Ethiopia, systematic political repression and pervasive human rights violations have denied citizens the freedom to associate and to freely form and express their political ideas. As a result, on election day, most voters there are unlikely to be presented with real choices.

Dear Mr apache when I read your articles,it seems like you have a good understanding, but I'm sensing that you are not giving a credit to the election just happened recently.I mean it is from zero election to this kind of facinating start.
It seems like that you see a red color & you said that you saw a black one.
In any kind of good histry, it never happen from none to 70% or 80%.what are expecting from our poor & backward country?
from what we are reading in all kind of media, nobody talking about lets improve this, yes it is a good start!
I've seen from haileslassie to meles,I know for sure any opposition never had one night stand.
Guys lets witness what we see in our naked eyes,if not it will be said to be abnormal.
some of you are saying that the EPRDF coalition is not a real, everybody in the EPRDF coalition has to be AMARA in order to be a real one!
thanks to the Oromo,Tigrai,Gambella, somali, southern people nations & nationalities & soon they still can sustain this kind of mentality for the sake of peace for their mother land Ethiopia.
thanks. |

Dear Gebretsadkan
The articles you mentioned are not mine. I am not a "writer", I post articles relevant to Ethiopian current events for our visitors to discuss. As much as possible I try not to participate in the discussion, as an admin of this site, it is not appropriate for me to post my views. My ultimate goal is for our visitors to fully control the discussion topics, though the number of registered users is increasing we still encourage more people to be active participants. Of course I have my own views but this site is not meant to express my views, rather to serve as a medium for all Ethiopians to discuss current events regardless of their points of views. |
